Google Shopping Feed Optimization 2025: The Ultimate Checklist
The complete checklist for maximizing your Google Merchant Center feed's visibility in AI Overviews, Shopping, and PMax campaigns.
Why Google Shopping Feed Is More Critical Than Ever in 2025
Google integrated AI Overviews and Performance Max campaigns directly with Merchant Center feeds. This means a well-optimized feed has a direct impact on both organic AI visibility and paid ad performance. Google's 2024 internal research shows that products with optimized titles and descriptions see an average 34% increase in PMax ROAS.
Title Optimization: The Highest-Impact Field
Google Shopping titles are the most critical field in your feed. Recommended formats by category:
- Apparel: Brand + Gender + Product Type + Attributes (color, size)
- Electronics: Brand + Model + Most Important Feature + Size/Capacity
- Furniture: Material + Product Type + Color + Dimensions
- Books: Book Title + Author + Genre
- Maximum 150 characters — but the first 70 chars are the most visible
Required vs. Recommended Fields
Merchant Center supports 70+ fields. Meeting minimums gets your feed approved, but for AI visibility, fill these 'Recommended' fields first:
- REQUIRED: id, title, description, link, image_link, availability, price, brand, gtin/mpn
- RECOMMENDED: additional_image_link (min 4 images), product_type, custom_labels
- RECOMMENDED: shipping, tax, return_policy_label, product_highlight (max 10 items)
- FOR AI: product_detail (attributes list), certification, item_group_id
Checklist: Before You Submit
Check these 10 items before submitting your feed to Merchant Center:
- Do all products have GTIN or MPN?
- Do prices exactly match landing page prices?
- Is the availability field synced with actual stock status?
- Is the main image on a white background (except apparel)?
- Are there banned words or ALL-CAPS spam in titles?
- Are descriptions free of HTML tags?
- Does each product have at least 3 additional images?
- Is product condition correctly specified (new/used/refurbished)?
- Is the feed getting a full refresh at least every 30 days?
- Is the error report showing zero critical/warning items?
How Feed Errors Impact AI Visibility
Merchant Center 'warnings' and 'errors' affect not just ad performance, but also organic visibility in AI Overviews. Products with missing titles, price mismatches, or broken images are automatically excluded from AI Overviews. AI Commerce Adapter compares your feed data against Merchant Center standards and generates a prioritized error list.
